By nature area studies is interdisciplinary and encompasses a variety of humanities and social sciences, including art, history, literature, philosophy, political science, anthropology, archaeology, and demographics. Collections may focus on a geographic area, such as Asia, Africa, Europe, Australia, or North and South America, or on an ethnic group assiciated with one of these continents.
